5 Accessible Things To Do in June

Indoor activities are back open and a heatwave is apparently on its way. Bring on June! Here is SHASBAH’s selection of accessible activities to do around Sheffield this month.

1. See some art at Millennium Gallery

Let’s make the most of our brilliant museums and galleries this month. It’s been a long time since their doors have been open! Millennium Gallery in particular has some great-looking exhibitions. Don’t miss their lovely shop filled with treasures from local Sheffield artists either. Located near to the station, it’s a good stop if you’re planning a day trip into town. Book your free tickets in advance on their website but remember, they’re not usually open on Mondays.

2. Visit Hillsborough Park Walled Garden

This little known spot in Hillsborough is a lovely place to meet a friend for coffee or just sit and enjoy the sun for a while. The garden is community-run and they’ve clearly been hard at work over lockdown. Find the Walled Garden at the top of Hillsborough Park, North Sheffield. Why not have a browse in the reopened library while you’re there?

3. Have a clear out and donate your old stuff

What better time than Spring to sort through your stuff, have a clean and donate anything you don’t need to charity. June is the #MonthOfCommunity after all! Most of your local charity shops will be more than happy to take donations. Here at SHASBAH, we’re collecting any unwanted gifts to sell as part of our fundraising tombola in September. Drop off your items addressed at our Burton Street offices, or contact us to arrange a collection.

4. Celebrate a special person for Carer’s Week

Carer’s Week is taking place from 7-13th June this year. It’s a chance to raise awareness of the work that carers do, which often goes unnoticed. It’s also a chance to recognise and celebrate any carers in our lives. After the past year, when many carers have had much less support and respite than usual, we think that Carer’s Week is even more important. Why not bake a cake, make a card or plan a special day out to treat them?

5. Take part in Beat the Street

Beat the Street is encouraging South Yorkshire residents to get out and about by turning our towns and cities into a giant game! Sign up on their website to get your Beat the Street card. Then earn points, win prizes and discover more about your area by finding Beat Boxes out on the streets. Beat the Street is available to play from mid-June in Sheffield and Barnsley.

We hope you can enjoy plenty of accessible activities this June. For more advice on the accessibility of different venues and activities around the UK, we recommend AccessAble’s free online guides. To see the rest of our monthly guides, click here.
