Chair of Sheffield ASBAH Committee
I’ve been the chairperson of SHASBAH since September 2021. I have Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus. It’s a great honour to be the first person with Spina bifida to hold this role in our charity. Personally, I’ve been a member of SHASBAH for 55 years.
It was with great sadness that we said a sad farewell to Barbara Clark, our wonderful secretary, who passed away suddenly at the end of 2019. Barbara was one of the founders of Sheffield ASBAH in 1964. Along with her dear departed husband Les, she did so much to create and develop our small charity, supporting so many families and individuals affected by Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Barbara is much missed by everyone who knew and worked with her.
Sheffield ASBAH Trustees
I joined the committee in the 90’s because I wanted to help this wonderful charity. I only thought I’d be here for a short time – but here we are a few years later, still here, loving all we do to help our members.
I joined Sheffield ASBAH in late 2020 after starting to volunteer to help build up our technological profile and help where I can in getting our members able to communicate online. I’m also more than happy to help with other online tasks. I became one of the trustees shortly after joining and look forward to meeting everyone.
I’ve volunteered for Sheffield ASBAH as a committee member on and off for over 30 years. I’m a former mainstream secondary school teacher, I’ve been a SENCO and I was a family support field worker for a centre for children with neuro-disabilities. After that, I began working with Shine charity as an education adviser. Most recently, I worked for SHASBAH as the Volunteer Coordinator and Bid Writer, until retiring in June 2021. I am also a parent of someone with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
If you would like to join the committee of Sheffield ASBAH and make a positive difference to the lives of everyone who has spina bifida and hydrocephalus in the Sheffield postal district, then get in touch by phoning 0780 445228 or 07752 665411

Befriending and Events Coordinator
My first child was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. When she was two (15 years ago) I started volunteering with SHASBAH. Now, I work for SHASBAH part-time and feel privileged to offer support that helped me back when this was all new. I love connecting with people, so my ‘work’ is a real joy.
I live in Barnsley with my husband, son and daughter. I’ve worked in the field of disabilities and difficulties for over 20 years. I’ve got experience of setting up a befriending project, as well as supporting families to access Special Needs education and connect with support services. I gave up my job to work part time after having my children, with my eldest having a physical and learning disability. I joined the SHASBAH team in May 2021.
Administrator and Befriending Support
I’ve been with the association for 5 years as treasurer. Presently, I’m working as the Administrator and I’m also a co-opted member of the committee. I was orginally introduced to the charity through a family member who had Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. A fun fact is that I’m twins with Michelle, our SHASBAH chair!
I started working for SHASBAH in September 2020. I also work as a PA for someone with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, which is how I found out about the charity. It’s great that I can use my creative side for a really worthwhile cause. Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, cooking and going for walks with friends.
