5 Accessible Activities for July

Summer’s here, there are rumours of another heatwave, school’s almost out, restrictions are almost over… So many reasons to get out and enjoy our city this month! Here are our suggestions of accessible activities around Sheffield this July.

1. Take part in the Photomarathon

A cartoon image shows a girl holding a purple camera, which says 'Photomarathon Sheffield'.

The friendly folk at Our Fave Places are running a mini version of their Photomarathon. This month, the challenge is to explore and photograph the route of the Sheffield Round Walk. Your snaps should be inspired by any of the four topics: Reflection, Peace and Quiet, Bliss and Come to Life.

Enter via email to hello@ourfaveplaces.co.uk or post your pics on Instagram including the tag #PhotomarathonSHF. Don’t forget to tag SHASBAH too, we’d love to see what you get up to.

2. Go on a Sketch Walk

Sheffield Libraries are organising Sketch Walks as part of their Wild Summer calendar of events. The walks will be led by an artist from Ignite Imaginations and tickets cost £5 each, with all materials provided. Book here. Don’t forget to check out all the other events that Sheffield Libraries are putting on this summer.

Monday 6th July, 6pm. Meet at Central Library and explore the City Centre.

Wednesday 14th July, 6pm. Meet at Woodseats Library and explore Graves Park.

3. Search for the Bears of Sheffield

The Bears of Sheffield have finally arrived! Support our Children’s Hospital AND have a fun day out by going on a bear hunt. The Bears are for the public to enjoy, since they celebrate everything that’s great about Sheffield. There are 60 big bears and 100 small bears hidden all around the city. Professional artists designed the big bears, which will be auctioned off at the end of the summer. Find where to get your trail map here.

4. Visit The Sheffield Project

The Sheffield Project is an exhibition of photographs taken by local artists during the 1980s. This was a period of big change for our city, as many SHASBAH members will remember. There was the movement away from the steel industry with many jobs lost, but also the beginning of iconic Sheffield sites, such as Meadowhall and the Don Valley Stadium. For a look back in time, check out The Sheffield Project at Weston Park Museum.

5. Come on an accessible barge trip!

Finally, SHASBAH and Ethel Trust Community Barge are offering a brilliant day trip to SHASBAH members. We’ll be taking a barge from Stanilands Marina through the beautiful countryside of South Yorkshire. It’ll be a chance to meet other people, enjoy the scenery, and try something completely new. Sounds like the perfect summer day out! Click here for more information. We’re happy to help with transport, so get in touch if you’d like to come.

We hope you have a wonderful July and can enjoy some of these accessible activities in and around Sheffield. We recommend the AccessAble guide if you’re wanting to check the accessibility of a venue before you explore. Keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook and Instagram for announcements about more upcoming events.
