Our Mascot, Shasby The Forgetful Fox, Is Fishing From The Accessible Pontoon.

Back on the Water with Accessible Fishing

Last weekend, SHASBAH took a few of our members to Ladybower Reservoir for our first Accessible Fishing trip since lockdown. After arriving from Sheffield in our various vehicles, we met the team from Ladybower Fisheries. Richard and Troy explained how everything would work and helped us get all set up for our adventures.

All aboard for a boat trip

A wheelchair user waits to board the accessible boat for a trip on the reservoir.

We boarded the new V17 ‘Wheely Boat’ for a speedy tour of the reservoir. Accessing the boat is a case of wheeling over a small ramp with high sides from the pontoon onto a platform, which is then lowered to the deck of the boat (pictured left). It was a quick trip because the boat goes up to 40mph! We were definitely holding onto our hats. Our young member, John, found it pretty thrilling. It was heart-warming to see him wide-eyed and giggling after a long year of shielding. Captain Troy even took us under the big bridge across the water. It was fun to see the beautiful scenery from a different perspective, although we did get very wind-swept!

Time for some fishing

Next it was off to the accessible pontoon to try our hand at fishing. We had some expert coaching from Richard and Troy, but the fish just weren’t biting! Not to worry, because we went away with some fresh trout for dinner anyway. There’s a great view from the pontoon, especially on a sunny day.

A surprise visitor!

As a last little treat, a special guest showed up to try his hand at fishing. That’s right, it was our mascot – Shasby! John couldn’t believe his eyes. Shasby had all sorts of fun posing for photos and chatting to everyone. He wasn’t any better at fishing than the rest of us though! What a wonderful trip.

A big thanks go to Richard, Troy and the rest of the team at Ladybower Fisheries. We can’t recommend them enough. Check out Accessibility Fishing for more information on their accessible fishing trips. These trips are open to all our members. SHASBAH wants to help you get out and about now that lockdown has finally lifted. We can help with transport from Sheffield and the surrounding area. Get in touch if you’d like to come!
