5 Accessible Things To Do in August

Run out of things to do in Sheffield this summer holiday? Look no further than our list of accessible activities for August!

1. Check out Sheffield by the Seaside

Sheffield by the Seaside is returning to the Peace Gardens for the whole of August. It’s a slice of the beach in the centre of our city, with Punch & Judy, a helter skelter, a huge sandpit and a splash in the fountains. Entry is free, so it’s the perfect activity for a sunny day.

2. Come to our Wheel, Walk and Wobble

SHASBAH’s annual Wheel, Walk and Wobble is on the 8th August at Sheffield Botanical Gardens! Join us for a treasure hunt around the gardens and bring a picnic to enjoy together afterwards. Rumour has it that Shasby might make an appearance… It’s going to be a great chance to see everyone and meet our new members after such a long year.

Entry is free and treasure maps will be provided on arrival. Get in touch to book your place.

3. Visit The Way Ahead Exhibition at Barnsley Civic

There’s an exciting exhibition going on at Barnsley Civic until the 7th August. Artist Caroline Cardus was inspired by the struggle of living as a wheelchair user in our society. As a result, she’s turned the access requests of local people into road signs, in order to show the barriers that disabled people face everyday. What a great project!

“The rules of the road are a wonderful visual system. Information is easily communicated through the arrangement of simple shapes and symbols. When it comes to travel, we have found a system most people can understand easily. The Way Ahead was inspired by a wish that such a system could exist for disability awareness.”

We definitely agree with that idea. Book a slot to see this brilliant and thought-provoking exhibition.

4. Get Coffee at an Accessible Cafe

Wanting to explore our city a bit more this summer? Looking for a place to meet friends now that restrictions have been eased? Check out this guide to 7 wheelchair-accessible cafes in Sheffield, published in Now Then magazine. Let’s keep supporting our local Sheffield businesses this month.

5. Head to Millhouses Park for some Summer Fun

If you’re craving a change of scenery, why not head over to Millhouses Park? They’ve got a water play area, basketball and tennis courts, a bowling green, a cafe and mini golf, so there’s something for everyone. On a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday morning, you might even see the Ship Model Society sailing their amazing creations on the boating lake.
